A Brief History of Woodlawn Baptist Church

The Church started as a mission in September 1933 under First Baptist Church of Welsh and Iowa.  The Rev. H.H. Stagg was pastor. A tent revival was held and Rev. Fletcher Hart was the evangelist.
1936-1942: Rev. St. Clair Bower was pastor.  Sunday school was held in an unused school or under a bush arbor.
1942-1946: Rev. L.A. Stagg was pastor. A building fund was started for the Church.
1946: Vacation Bible School and Training Union began. Bro. Lewis Grant, pastor at Iowa, was the Interim Pastor.
1946-1950: Morning and Evening Worship started with Bro. Hoyle Haire as pastor.  Woodlawn Mission organized into a church, September 1, 1949 with forty-seven Charter Members, six elected Deacons and seven Trustees.  Ground breaking ceremony and construction begins. March 5, 1950 is the dedication service.
1963-2009: Fenton Baptist Church requests to be a mission of Woodlawn Baptist Church. Many renovations to the parsonage and church during this time.  Pastors through this time period: Bro. James Mallard, Bill Long, B.A. Sigler, Charles Winstead, Don Willis, Ricky Byargeon, David Ellis, Benny Billings, Raymond Shawa, Dore Langley, Bob Colquette, Jerry Johnson, as well as many are interim pastors.
1975: Eight lots purchased adjacent to the church.  Vote to have a building committee begins the study for a fellowship hall.
2004: Church arson fire damages the church to an unusable state.  Services are held in the fellowship hall.
2007:  Work is complete and services begin once again in the sanctuary!
2010: Bro. Richard Louviere becomes pastor.  RA's, Ga's, and Mission Friends become active once again.  Chris McNamee joins the staff as Youth Minister for grades 6-12.
2020: Covid pandemic causes church services to go online. Bro. Richard preaches from his home using an iPad every Sunday morning.  Bro. Richard surprises members viewing as he and Music Director, Bryan Maddox bring Resurrection - Easter Service in an empty Woodlawn Baptist church via Facebook Live.  (April 12, 2020)
Present: The church continues to thrive in the small community of Woodlawn, LA.  We are so thankful for the members that are active and dedicated, both those of yesteryear and those today.  "Where it's all about Him!"
